Major Gift Officer – Bellevue

Hours: 40/week; M-F

This newly created position will enhance Kindering’s strong Development Department and agency fundraising success by leading efforts in launching Kindering’s concentrated Major Gift Program in coordination with our Chief Development Officer and Chief Executive Officer.

The Major Gift Officer’s primary responsibility is honing and leading an efficient major gift program while maintaining relationships with new and current major donors ($10,000+).  The Major Gift Officer will lead efforts to identify, approach, cultivate, inspire and maximize major gift revenue, increasing both total revenue and number of major donors ($10,000+).

This position will be regularly and customarily engaged away from the office for the purpose of promoting Kindering and our mission to donors.  Outreach includes high donor contact, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop and deepen relationships with a portfolio of donors in support of Kindering’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Develop individual engagement strategies for each major donor and for prospects in the major donor portfolio (100+ donors).
  • Develop active, positive and professional relationships with new and current major donors, as well as with lapsed donors for the purpose of reactivation back to the major donor level.
  • Maximize major gift revenue by cultivating, soliciting, stewarding and maintaining ongoing relationships with assigned donors and prospects.
  • Meet annual revenue goals for portfolio as mutually established by the CEO and employee.
  • Oversee prospect research and objectives for new donors/funding sources relevant to Kindering’s mission and program offerings. The Major Gift Officer will continually broaden the base of major gift support by identifying new donors and adding them to the prospect pool.
  • Plan, organize and delegate the support and participation in the Major Gift program with other Kindering staff and board members, particularly donor relations activities including direct solicitation.
  • Support, train, motivate and partner with lead board members and volunteers who will assist with solicitations.
  • Demonstrate an eagerness to learn about Kindering and our mission.
  • Develop a keen understanding of current programs, goals, strategies and financial needs.
  • In partnership with the Chief Development Officer, create and submit for approval an annual major gift work plan that meets or exceeds annual goals.
  • Create a monthly major gift update for CDO, CEO and Board.
  • Manage and assist with other projects and duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience

  • Educational requirements: B.A./B.S. degree in Communications, English, professional writing or similar coursework. Advanced degree encouraged.
  • 10+ years of high-achievement, hand-on experience in a successful major-gift program with emphasis in the areas of best practices, program development, donor cultivation and direct solicitation.
  • Significant experience with the area’s funding community is highly desirable.
  • Previous leadership experience in overall major gift programs is highly desirable including capital campaigns, appeals and creative solicitations.
  • Proven experience in providing leadership to staff and volunteers in their fundraising efforts and success.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage professionally and passionately with a wide and diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Proven ability and interest in working independently without a high-level of management oversight.
  • Excellent follow-through and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and extraordinary organizational skills.
  • Experience creating complex budgets; ability to understand and explain nonprofit budgets to others.
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office and donor research tools; experience with WealthEngine is highly desirable.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects, meet multiple, often conflicting, deadlines and enjoy a fast-paced, ever changing work environment.

Minimum Prerequisites

  • Pass Washington State DSHS criminal history and background check and FBI fingerprint check
  • Demonstrate skill in word processing and familiarity with MS Word, Outlook and Excel
  • Possess valid Washington State driver’s license and valid automobile insurance
  • Have access to a dependable personal vehicle
  • Be able to lift 40 pounds (average three-year-old)
  • Pass tuberculosis test
